That’s right. Good one, Newsweek.
If you’re not getting the gist of it, I’m talking about the subject matter in the article. Basically, this student called Larry King was murdered because he was gay. So you’d think the article would be about the homophobic attitudes of today, and what we should do about it. That’s what I thought too, but I obviously thought wrong. The article is instead pondering whether schools are ready for queer people/gender identity or not.
Say it with me now: “WHAT?”
I know, right?
Once you read through the article, go back and read the summary of this article under the title:
“Kids are coming out younger, but are schools ready to handle the complex issues of identity and sexuality? For Larry King, the question had tragic implications.”
Um, “… but are schools ready to handle the complex issues of identity and sexuality?” Are you joking? Gender identity and sexuality have been around for AGES now. Just look at the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. There’s all that queer stuff happening there. Look at the large amount of well-known people who look androgynous: Patrick Wolf, Prince, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, K.D. Lang, Grace Jones… gosh, I could go on. And not to mention cross dressing roles in movies: Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Show, Barbara Streisand in Yentl, heck, even Amanda Bynes in She’s The Man. How long has it been now? Well, I know it’s been going on for over 3000 years during the times of ancient Egypt. So how long is it going to take when people stop being so fucking stupid? Another 3000 years? Jeebus.
And then you look at the caption of the picture:
“A 15-year-old boy told family and friends he was gay. He dressed flamboyantly; he hit on a classmate. His murder made clear that issues of sexuality, at such a young age, can have heartbreaking consequences.”
Consequence? No, King being out-and-proud about his sexuality and gender identity does not create the consequence of him getting murdered – oh, hai. VICTIM BLAMING, ANYONE? – this kind of consequence is created from society being such a douchebag. So can you guys stop being douchebags now? And I’m especially talking to you, Newsweek.
Oh God, I could go on about how queerphobic this article is:
- This article is perpetuating the heteronormative, gender binary status. Oh no, God forbid that there’s someone out there who’s a man that wants to look like a woman, oh no, God help us all, because you know, that would surely wipe out the whole human race.
- The vice prinicipal saying that it’ll bring sex into the school. What, because it’ll disturb the stupid abstinence-only program that your school probably has? What, is it because queer people are so immoral that they have sex all the time. Oh noes! SMEXXXXXXXSHULLLSSS!!!
- The article talking about how young kids are being pressured into being queer and exploring their gender identity. Um, wtf, that is the complete opposite. The last time I checked, I couldn’t find a prime-time show where the majority of the characters were queer. Because you know, my friend was SO pressured into being gay; that’s why he has identified as gay today.
So fucking ignorant. This article reeks of heterosexual privilege so much, it stinks up to the high heavens.
