I was reading this thread where this guy downloaded the “workprint” version of the new Wolverine movie coming out, and by “workprint”, he means the movie that hasn’t had the special and lighting effects added in just yet.
Rather than talking about the movie itself, the thread got de-railed and turned into a “Is downloading wrong or right?” (You just need to read the first five pages to see where this is going.)
As someone who downloads, this thread really annoyed me.
A lot of the posters in there were really pinning “Hurricane” to the wall, telling him that he was a thief for stealing in the first place. There were a lot of posters telling him it was morally wrong… problem is, those posters were looking at it from a black-and-white perspective.
Like I said before, many people look at downloading as a black-and-white issue. We have the Internet now, it’s not a black-and-white issue anymore.
A lot of people are seeing this downloading as a problem and simply calling it stealing, simply because the record labels (using music for the sake of an example) said so. Okay, so what if it is stealing? Because I can download, I have an advantage over the people who make this music for me. Rather than letting record labels having influence on whether I like it or not, I can make my OWN decision on whether I like it or not. My opinion is not influenced by anyone else, and I can make a sound decision as to whether this investment is safe for me or not.
So what if I don’t like it? That’s the entertainment industry for you – sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. Just because I can decide on my own, all the bigwigs in the entertainment industry are getting their panties in a knot, because they think it is lost profit.
Someone’s probably going to come in telling me that I’m justifying my reasons for being immoral because I steal, but whatever. You can keep gambling with your money on whether or not you want to purchase said product, at least I – as a consumer – can make a sound decision on whether to buy it or not.
